The Suzanne Winsor Freeman Memorial Student Genealogy Fund was established in 2010 to assist young genealogists seeking to advance their genealogical education. To date, five students have been named to receive the $500 cash award and free registration to the Southern California Genealogical Society Jamboree. In 2012, a generous private contribution to the Grant Fund allowed the committee to award two grant prizes.
Elyse Doerflinger of Lomita, California and A.C. Ivory of Salt Lake City, Utah each received a $500 check and full complimentary registration to the 2012 SCGS Jamboree in Burbank, California.
Elyse is a graduate of Cal State University, Dominguez Hills where she received her degree in Elementary Education. She now teaches primary school in Torrance, California and attends graduate school through the University of California, San Diego. Elyse makes good use of vacation time to pursue her genealogy research, writing, and lecturing. Blog readers will know Elyse from her popular website and YouTube channel where she enthusiastically shares her love of family history and her genealogical adventures.
Like many family historians, Elyse is the designated Curator for her family’s collection of photos, documents, and artifacts. She used her grant funds to purchase archival containers and supplies for her family archive, to rent microfilm for personal genealogy research, and to purchase online webinars and books to further her genealogy education.
Elyse plans to attend the 2016 SCGS Jamboree in Burbank, California. Be sure to stop and say “Hello” when you see this dedicated young genealogist. Read more about the Suzanne Winsor Freeman Student Genealogy Grant and learn how you can support the next generation of genealogists.
