It’s only been one week since the 2017 SCGS Genealogy Jamboree, and I’m already looking forward to 2018! I’ve lost count of the number of years I’ve attended, but I always drive home inspired by the outstanding speakers and energized to tackle my genealogy research.
Jamboree is extra-special to me because I have the honor of meeting the newest recipient of the Suzanne Winsor Freeman Student Genealogy Grant, founded in honor of my mother, and catching up with previous awardees who return to attend the conference. This year, five of our seven grant winners were able to attend and finally meet each other for the first time!
Mindy Jacox, 2017 recipient, attended both the DNA Day and Jamboree Conference and met former winners Elyse Doerflinger, Melanie Frick, Anthony Ray, and Paul Woodbury. We missed A.C. Ivory and Michael Savoca and hope to see them next year!
When we began the grant program in 2010, the Southern California Genealogical Society Jamboree was one of the few society conferences offering a student rate or scholarship. Today, it’s wonderful to see affordable student conference rates at many events.
Each year, SCGS Genealogy Jamboree has partnered with the Student Genealogy Grant to offer full conference registration to the grant winner. This year, Jamboree included two-night’s accommodation at the conference hotel. Thank you Jamboree for your far-reaching support of the next generation of genealogists.
